Status: Lion (Panthera leo)
Lions are currently listed as vulnerable on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. However, in some parts of Africa, lions are classified as 'critically endangered' because lion populations are still plummeting at an unprecedented rate. The LAND 4 LIONS PROJECT aims to ensure a sound record and biodata repository of the valuable genetic information and material of South Africa's 8500+ doomed captive lions for at least future reference and possible research utilisation.
